Bridal Shower Cake: Make it Special

Now we come to the bridal shower cake. Whatever else you do, go overboard when it comes to the cake. Traditionally, this is the most important food item in a party. If you want to bake it yourself but you are hopeless at decorating, then enlist the help of an expert when it comes to that aspect.

Most wedding cakes are traditional, but with the bridal shower cake you can go crazy with creativity if you want to, since color, size and style have no restrictions! Bridal shower cakes can also be any flavor you wish, and are usually done in whatever is the bride’s favorite flavor or, if there are quite a few guests, two different flavors such as half white and half chocolate so that everyone has something they like.

If you would like to go traditional, choose a sheet cake and decorate the top with an umbrella festooned with flowers in the colors of the shower or the wedding party. There are also bakeries that can now take just about any photo you have an superimpose the image onto the icing, so if you have a favorite picture of the bride with her bridesmaids, or perhaps a photo of her as a little girl playing dress-up in her mom’s wedding gown, this would be perfect!

Additional Bridal Shower Cake Ideas

For a tea party, Wilton’s cake decorating site has instructions for the ambitious that show how to make a teapot shaped, decorated cake that is charming. You can then bake cupcakes to make into individual teacups as well.

For a garden or floral theme, there are plenty of festive ways to decorate individual cupcakes as flowers with colored icings. These are easy to serve and can be done as a creative arrangement as well. Imagine arranging cupcakes at an autumn shower on a tiered serving tray with cupcakes iced as yellow, orange and purple mums and zinnias. Beautiful!

Individually decorated “gift boxes” are also delightful touches. These little petit fours are an alternative to a sheet or layer cake that is elegant and festive. For the holidays, have them decorated in Christmas or Hanukah colors. Otherwise, go with either the theme or the wedding colors (or the oh-so-recognizable “Tiffany box” colors for a truly prestigious looking presentation!)

To make it really personal, ask the bride’s mother for a recipe that is her daughter’s favorite, or better yet, honor the mother of the bride by inviting her to bake it. Whatever option you choose, when the it's presented to the guests you want to ensure that there are plenty of oohs and aaahs and that everyone asks for seconds.
